Dual Language Immersion

Dual Language Immersion at Concord

Concord International offers a two-way dual language immersion program in Spanish and English for students in Kindergarten – 5th grade. Students receive academic instruction in Spanish and English from a highly proficient teacher using only the target language during the immersion time. Students also gain proficiency through interactions with their native-speaking peers, and develop cooperative skills and cross-cultural understanding.

The primary goal of the dual language immersion program is for all students to become linguistically proficient in English and in Spanish, and to excel academically.

How does it work?

Students in the dual language program are taught in both English and Spanish during the school day. Literacy is taught in their native language in Kindergarten and 1st grade. If your student is already reading and writing at grade level he/she may be offered literacy instruction in their secondary language.

Second grade students begin to receive literacy instruction in both languages; however, some students may be provided additional time in their native language if necessary.

Students in our dual language program learn to be bilingual and bi-literate – fluent in reading, writing, speaking and listening in the Spanish and English language.

In order to achieve the academic benefit of the dual language model, it is recommended that students remain in the program from Kindergarten – 5th grade as language acquisition takes 4-7 years. After 5th grade students have the opportunity to continue in the dual language program at Denny International Middle School and Chief Sealth International High School.
