Dual Language Education at Concord

Concord International offers a two-way dual language program in Spanish and English for students in Kindergarten – 5th grade. A two-way dual language program model consists of a balanced number of native speakers of the target language (Spanish) and dominant English speakers. Students receive academic instruction in Spanish and English from a bilingual teacher using only the target language during specific instructional time. Students gain Spanish and English proficiency through interactions with their teacher and each other. All students have the opportunity to serve in the role of language model and language learner at different times. The goals of Concord’s dual language program is developing biliteracy and bilingualism for all students, as well as grade level academic achievement and identity development among students.

How does it work?

Students in the dual language program are taught in both Spanish and English during the school day. At Concord, initial literacy is taught in both Spanish and English from Kindergarten onward for all students.

Students in the dual language program develop bilingualism and biliteracy – fluency in reading, writing, speaking and listening in the Spanish and English language.

In order to develop the highest level of biliteracy and academic growth, it is recommended that students remain in the program from Kindergarten – 5th grade. After 5th grade students have the opportunity to continue in the dual language program at Denny International Middle School and Chief Sealth International High School, where they can take Spanish Language Arts and Social Studies in Spanish at each grade level.
